September 24, 1999My leg is still attached. I'm still healing. Started learning what being a
marshal really means. I'm doing what I can to help on Wednesday nights. September's tip: When fighting in melee situations, YELL! You can't be loud enough. Make sure those you are fighting with hear you when you die or are legged/armed. I cannot emphasize this enough. Be obnoxious. Be Loud. Communicate. It's your safety that's on the line. July 4, 1999Well, the month of bad luck is over. But now I'm immobile. I broke my left leg last Thursday at fighter practice. Oh well. Can't win everything. We were fighting a melee and my clutzy self tripped over my own foot. So now I'm not allowed to play for awhile. :-( I'm hoping to get a wheelchair so I can get around easier. I go to the doctor on Wednesday to see if I get a hip-to-ankle cast. July's tip: Don't step back with your fibula or on it. It might snap. June 18, 1999Today is my birthday. Can't wait for my party tonight. I'm hoping to swishypoke a bit before everyone arrives. I've updated my rapier page, checked most of the links... My Rapier Page It contains my rapier bookmarks. Deb and Diego's school of the blade meets on Tuesday nights. Now, that SunDragon has changed to Sunday nights, when I work, I can't play out there regularly til fall/winter. Too bad I work Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights. Grrr... At least, when I was on day shift, I could play at fighter practice most any day that I wanted to. I'm currently working on my defense. I'm getting better, at least that's what I am told. I've gotten aggressive enough, now I need to work on patience... I also recently acquired one of Malcolm's(Scottie Armoury) new dagger blades. So far, it has worked well for me. Working on my defense(off hand parries) has helped a bunch. And since I don't anything else for it, I use my tankard strap to dangle my dagger from my belt. :-) Still got those pointy spears. he-he-he Actually I became interested in shinai at Spring Potrero (1998). It was way cool watching the melee scenarios. They were much more fun than the hard suits. And, yes, I'm still working on the doublet pattern. The sewing machine died! (actually, I was told it was threaded incorrectly) Oh well, so much for the excuse. And I'm moving in 2 weeks(if anyone cares). Back to an SCA house! YAY!!! At least I won't be the baronial stray again. BTW, tip of the month: Don't lead with your HEAD! Rapier, My story:Here, I, m'lady Arianna the Curious, will ramble on about my new found love: Rapier. And my experiences with it. It's much more satisfying and consistent then people or relationships. It's always there, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, Monday fighter practices... A lot more reliable than my love life... er... romantic interests... er ...um... You get the picture. I can't seem to get enough of it. Though I don't have the time to play other than on Wed, Thurs, and every other Sun(when there are no events). How and when I started:I became interested in Shanai in the fall of 1998. A couple of friends talked me into trying Rapier. I started playing in December, and got authorized in January. I figured it would be a great way to get back into shape (I was an office-slug/cubicle person for almost 6 months.), and have fun with friends. I didn't know that I would become hooked. I love the adrenalin rush I get when swishy-poking. I have met some incredible people since I started. The people of SunDragon and Barony of Atenveldt have been so helpful to my learning process. They have put up with my questions, confusion, and contradictions. I just recently was given a blue scarf. A blue scarf rank is a beginner in the Atenveldt Rapier Guild. Next, is a blue-gold scarf. Then a gold scarf. A white scarf is basically the equivalent of a knight or pelican, and is given by the King and Queen. The blue is a nice touch to my purple and black colors. At the same court that I got my blue scarf, I was called up to receive 3 yards of white brocade for being Best Dressed of the Tourney. How could I have known the Baroness likes purple(I wore my purple crushed velvet doublet and purple and black rose skirt). That was so cool and unexpected! I still haven't decided on what to make with it. The best part about Rapier is that I enjoy it so much. My opponents enjoy fighting me because we have fun(that's a must!) and learn from each other. I have been concentrating on point work, measure, offense, body language, and some footwork. I need a lot more work on my defense. I learned that at Defender of the Western Shores. I've learned some rapier/fencing terms from browsing the net. I've linked to those sources from my rapier page. First Rapier Page - on Tripod (has pop-up ads) or Rapier Page- No Ads Defender of the Western Shores at ICCL(Lake Havasu City) was a blast. I had fun playing all day, but I only regret forgetting the sunscreen. My face got so sunburnt! I enjoyed fencing with newbies, masters, and folks of all skills. I like the idea of the Dance Card Tourney. That was cool! Everyone was so nice. I'm very glad I went. Rapier garb has been kinda hard for me to make. I'm having trouble getting doublets to fit right. I hope to learn more, so I can make some beautiful garb out of the georgeous material I have. So far I have cheated, I bought doublet from a lady from AnTir at Estrella(pretty purple crushed velvet! and I can fight in it!) and paid someone to make me a fancy court doublet out of purple and gold silk brocade(simply georgeous!). My goodness, it's gorgeous!!! (Please don't drool, the colors will bleed.) Thanks to those who have taught me something... (Sorry, I am not adding titles at this point in time, you'll just have to guess who you are)
Those I have yet to play with...
And many of you know so well of my... uh... um... breast spears. Painful hugs, but fun none the less. ha-ha Hmmm... I really should make anatomically correct armor with them on the outside, paint them flesh-colored, and pierce 'em. Oh great, make my little doublet project harder. :-)
Til later... meow...
